I am very happy to recommend this publication and hope that it will help foster the devout singing in the Liturgy of the Church. St Pius X, in a famous Apostolic Constitution on the Psalter in the Divine Office, said 'From the beginning of the Church the divinely inspired psalms in the Bible have had a remarkable influence in deepening the devotion of the Faithful as they offered to God a continual sacrifice of praise, that is the tribute of lips that acknowledge his name . . . they have played a major part in the Sacred Liturgy. St Pius X quotes St Augustine who, addressing God in his Confessions, says: 'I wept at the beauty of your hymns and Canticles, and was powerfully moved at the sweet sound of your Church's singing. These sounds flowed into my ears, and the truth streamed into my heart: so that my feeling of devotion overflowed, and the tears ran from my eyes and I was happy in them.' The psalms are the Church's spousal response to her divine bridegroom, who has, through his Spirit, inspired these lovely songs which reflect our every mood and express our every need.
